Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
Congratulations on your new tattoo! Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your tattoo heals well and looks its best. Follow these instructions carefully:
1. Initial Care:
-
Leave the Bandage On: Keep the bandage or plastic wrap on for the first 2-4 hours to protect your tattoo from bacteria and prevent bleeding.
-
Wash Your Hands: Always wash your hands with soap and water before touching your tattoo.

2. Cleaning Your Tattoo:
-
Remove the Bandage: Gently remove the bandage or plastic wrap.
-
Wash Gently: Use lukewarm water and mild, unscented soap to gently wash the tattoo. Avoid using a washcloth or anything abrasive.
-
Pat Dry: Gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub or use a regular towel, as they can harbor bacteria.

3. Applying Ointment:
-
Initial Application: Apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific ointment (e.g., Aquaphor, A+D ointment) or an unscented moisturizer recommended by your artist.
-
Frequency: Apply the ointment 2-3 times a day for the first 3 days. Make sure the tattoo is not too wet or greasy.

4. Moisturizing:
-
Switch to Lotion: After the initial 3 days, switch to a fragrance-free, unscented lotion (e.g., Lubriderm, Eucerin).
-
Apply Lightly: Apply a thin layer of lotion to keep the tattoo moisturized but not overly saturated. Continue to moisturize 2-3 times a day for the next 2 weeks.

5. General Care Tips:
-
Avoid Submersion: Do not soak your tattoo in water (baths, swimming pools, hot tubs) for at least 2 weeks. Quick showers are fine.
-
Avoid Sun Exposure: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds for at least 2-3 weeks. After it heals, always use sunscreen to protect the tattoo.
-
Avoid Tight Clothing: Wear loose, clean clothing over the tattoo to avoid irritation and allow the tattoo to breathe.
-
Do Not Scratch or Pick: As your tattoo heals, it may scab or peel. Do not scratch, pick, or peel the scabs and flakes as this can cause ink loss and scarring.

6. Healing Process:
-
Peeling and Itching: It’s normal for your tattoo to peel and itch during healing. Gently patting (not scratching) can relieve itching.
-
Healing Time: Most tattoos take 2-3 weeks to heal initially, but it can take up to 6 months for full healing beneath the skin.

7. Signs of Infection:
-
Monitor Your Tattoo: Watch for signs of infection such as excessive redness, swelling, pus, or a foul odor.
-
Seek Medical Advice: If you suspect an infection, contact your tattoo artist and seek medical advice promptly.

8. Follow-Up:
-
Touch-Ups: Some tattoos may require touch-ups after healing. Consult your artist about any touch-up needs.
-
Check-In: Feel free to reach out to your tattoo artist with any questions or concerns during the healing process.

By following these aftercare instructions, you will help ensure your tattoo heals beautifully and remains vibrant for years to come. Enjoy your new piece of art!
